China is a nation possessing a long and fascinating history, and the China adoption program is one of the most stable and reliable. From 1983 to 2003, U.S. citizens adopted 40,496 children from China. From 2004 to 2008, U.S. citizens adopted 37,849 children from China.

Medical experts have found that the overall health of Chinese orphans is exceptional. Due to the strong traditional culture of China, there have been a limited number of adoption concerns related to drug or alcohol abuse. And, due to the placement of children at a relatively young age, Bonding and Attachment Disorder issues are less common.

Reason for Availability

Abandoned children are taken to local orphanages and made available for adoption through the China Center for Children's Welfare and Adoption (CCCWA). Note: on February 15, 2011, the China Centre of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) changed their name to the China Center for Children's Welfare and Adoption (CCCWA). Some documents may still refer to CCAA.

Children's Situation

The children live in well-run orphanages or foster homes.

Eligibility for Families

  • The minimum age for applicants is thirty years old. The maximum age is younger than fifty at submission of dossier.
  • Only heterosexual married couples may apply. Couples must be married two years if it is a first marriage. Couples must be married five years if it is a second marriage for either/both spouse(s). No more than two divorces will be accepted.
  • Annual income of $10,000 per family member plus the adopted child is required. Family net worth should be $80,000 or more.
  • Prospective parents must have achieved at least a high school or vocational school education.
  • Families may not have more than four children already in their home.
  • Prospective parents must have no history of domestic violence, drug usage, or excessive alcohol use.
  • Prospective parents must have no criminal activity in the past ten years (no more than three total offenses). Misdemeanors more than ten years old are considered on a case by case basis.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) must be 40 or less.
  • Certain medical conditions and criminal violations may cause one to be ineligible. Please speak with an AAI consultant to determine prospective adoptive parent eligibility.

Time Frame

  • The current waiting time from dossier submission to travel is currently over 5 years.

Procedure

  • You will first submit a preliminary application to AAI and then complete your formal application. Next, you will begin your home study, your USCIS paperwork, and prepare your dossier.
  • Upon completion of your dossier, your documents are sent to China.
  • Once you are approved by the CCCWA, you will receive your referral.
  • After formally accepting the child, China will provide you with travel notice approval. You will then travel to China to bring your child home.

Travel

  • Prospective adoptive parents will take one trip lasting approximately two weeks. You will fly into Beijing, do some sightseeing, and then travel to meet your child.
  • One or both parents may travel. You may travel with other adoptive families or individually and have a Chinese and English speaking escort in China.
